The Joys and Responsibilities of Giving Disable Dogs a Safe Home With Dr. Melissa Shapiro
This month’s Pet Game Changer is veterinarian and educator Dr. Melissa Shapiro, guardian of the world famous deaf, blind, pink puppy, Piglet, and the Piglet Mindset® platform.
From a very young age, Dr. Melissa was drawn to disabled, special needs pets; as empty-nesters, she and her husband began adding dogs to the family, including a tiny, one-pound very special needs pup they named Piglet.
Dr. Melissa was committed to giving Piglet, who couldn’t do all the things sighted, hearing dogs enjoyed, a productive and meaningful life.
The Piglet Mindset platform and its mission to inspire children and adults to be resilient, inclusive, and kind, is the result of Dr. Melissa’s commitment to Piglet, and Piglet’s ability to inspire others to face life’s challenges with a positive attitude.

    I don’t understand, if this “condition” brings so much heartache, then why don’t we stop breeding these dogs with these features. These are man made problems, it galls me that so many people that buy and breed these dogs ( and cats), say in one breath, i love dogs, but then perpetuate the problem. Let’s have animals that nature designed, if you want a smoosh face, get a stuffed animal. What happened to, first do no harm.

    My 7 year old Akita Tank who is 140 lbs, has hypothyroidism and had been on antibiotics for almost a whole month, had an episode on Sat. he woke up very shaky and out of the blue had like a seizure.... he all of a sudden seem to lose ability to walk (hind legs).....I rushed him to the vet and they did extensive blood tests (all normal) and he could hobble along a bit...but with difficulty ....by the time we left the vet he could no longer walk at all. They had given me a pain killer for him which he had a horrible reaction to. He had many of the symptoms mentioned here Sunday he was calmer but still could not walk at all, not hind legs or front legs......nor could he seem to focus or recognize us he acted like he could not see or focus on food or water. It was very much like vertigo. Monday he was very weak...BUT standing, and went outside with assistance.... He still seemed to have a slight issue with coordination when eating/drinking....like he does not know how, so hand feeding him slowly. Today (Thurs) he is almost completely normal. ....2.5 years ago he got salmonella from Fresh Pet food....(I almost lost my other dog who had been on 5 weeks of antibiotics) Both have had constant reoccurring diarrhea since then. So my questions are 1. could the antibiotic have cause this ? The antibiotic was Meytonidazole 500mg 3-2X a day. the thyroid medication is Levothyroxine 0.6 mg 1.5 -2X a day and the pain med that he had such a bad reaction to was Carprofen 4 once a day ....I did not give this to him again after that 1st night. 2. Is there a more natural antibiotic that I can look into or ask about or even make to help him if he gets it again?? I would be so afraid to put him on any antibiotic now. 3. Is there a method of controlling reoccurring diarrhea ??

    I have taken my cat to the vet so many times because of this and I finally found out what it is through Tik Tok 😂. In the past the vet always said it was fleas or allergies. Actually during allergy season, I notice it does happen more often so it might be the case a bit. However it would still happen during other seasons. I have noticed it is a LOT less now compared to before. My cat used to have urinary cystitis and I was recommended to put her on a fish only diet and giving her purified water. This helped so much. I think this may have also helped with her back rippling and freak outs. Not sure but it might have since now it only happens 1-2x a day when before it used to happen so much I would want to cry. And the vet would only say its allergies after doing x-rays and blood work. I am going to try putting her on CBD to see if that will help. Her food is mostly from Tiki cat. I give her both dry and wet food. I try giving her only wet food but she gets constipated from that so I include dry food too. I hope she isn’t in too much pain when the twitching happens. That just breaks my heart. I always assumed maybe she is just itchy because of allergies so I would put a wet towel on her to maybe wipe off the pollen from outside. I hope it is nothing serious and it doesn’t develop into anything else 😢.

    So my fat cat bub is like 6 years old now and he’s never been to the vet (both of our cats a relatively healthy and are indoors 80% of the time, and they take care of themselves a lot so we’ve never had a need to take them.) That being said, i’ve noticed only just in the past few years when he’s started to get closer to me, resulting in me showering him in pats! that his spine/mid-lower back twitches when i pay or stroke his fur there. I wanted to get my mom to take him to the vet for it but then i did some research and figured out it’s a pretty normal thing, but also not common amongst most cats or so I read. But this video helps! Yay! I’ll just have to stop patting his back; he loves head pats!

    Have you had any experience with PEMF in a dog with visceral mast cell? Her spleen was removed but biopsies of where the stomach empties into the duodenum were positive as well. I would like to use PEMF but want to make sure it won’t be an issue. My vet isn’t familiar with it.

    My challenge when our boy was sick was finding a therapist that made me feel as though they understood. There was one out-of-network therapist who is a 45 minute driveway and she quite literally didn't even understand the concept of anticipatory grief and never even offered tissues when I would cry. As you can imagine now that our dog is dead I have not called her and I probably never will. Instead I called my old therapist who only does phone calls now and that was useless so basically I didn't have any proper therapy resources while he was sick but I tried to get help beforehand

    Hi my cat who is 1yr old seems to throw up a couple times a month. She's been like this since i got her at 8months. She is an indoor cat so she is not spayed nor did i give her any shots. She is a small cat probably the runt of tge litter and she's a very picky eater with a small appetite but she does eat and drink lots of water and she is very playful and happy. I'm constantly changing her wet food brands because she gets sick of the same thing after about 3 days. She will only eat her food pureed .. not even pate. Should i be concerned with her throwing up or is that fairly normal if she is all round healthy in general?

    2:58 a kind soul shared the PDF of this book with me on Rainbow Bridge forum. I have just started it but am currently still working my way through the various videos like this on youtube, as the comments are providing me with a sense of group therapy and community 🌈💛 I find the stages of grief to be very helpful and whenever people try to debunk that when I'm in the midst of grief I Find it extremely disempowering because the stages of grief are quite accurate and deeply resonates With Me. I definitely abruptly quit my job and burned bridges when my first dog passed away and I do not regret it at all!!!!!My boss said "it was just a dog". She was toxic and had poor boundaries and was a bully. I am glad I stopped working for her. She had a cat of her own that she had to put down but she never grieved I don't even know if she's capable of bonding with animals. This was a comforting talk to listen to Thank You

    100 percent agree with you Dr. Robb.....no one should tell us what to give our pets over a Veterinarian. I spent money for my pet, I give my pet the best care and food and many other things I do for food for my dog and NO ONE should tell me that my dog needs more than 1 rabies in their life span. I am being forced to give my 3 yr old Doberman another rabies and I hate doing it but since I cant move, I am forced to do it but hate doing it because I listened to your video years ago about the dosage of a rabies no matter the size of the dog. It sickens me when I saw those people in the video either on their cell phone, sleeping or laughing....one day I would like to laugh at them !!!

    • @TheYazmanian
      @TheYazmanian 25 днів тому

      I've lost 2 dogs now and I'm still conflicted on this topic. I couldn't bring myself to keep the euthanasia appointments for my first dog, Trey. She was 17. And started dying suddenly at 2 in the morning one random night and it was very shocking and traumatic for me and it did not seem peaceful. I promised to never make that mistake again. Our second dog was euthanized at our vet's office. And even though I knew he was old and sick with IBD and the vet suspected cancer too. He struggled to eat and was emaciated (he was a 14-year-old German Shepherd), I feel as though I robbed him of what little time he had left and I feel as though I robbed him of the chance to fight and continue to receive more love for me until it was actually his natural time. In both cases I have regrets but they are slightly different. What I have come to realize is that no matter how they go we aren't ready to say goodbye and we wish they could live as long as us. I take some comfort in knowing that Ralphie (the German Shepherd) didn't suffer as much as Trey and that his death was quick, painless, and somewhat peaceful. Still, I wish I had waited just a little longer but I was worried it would turn into a Trey situation 💔
